Chapter: Fifteen
The police like playing a different kind of game with niggas on parole, and Fool calls it inny-minny-miney-moe. When there’s an unsolved crime in the neighborhood, whoever’s name pops up in a hat gets matched up with a case, sometimes a body. Even though he’s never been a victim of the cop’s new shakedown routine, Sundae bootlegged a copy of their game plan and he had Angel’s moves figured out the minute he got cuffed up and tossed in the back of the detective’s blacked-out Explorer.
The raid was just a front for Angel’s dirty work, and their show of force was meant as a warning message for the Goldmine’s crew while their boss got taken for a spin around the block. The crooked dick is riding shotgun while a ratty-looking Italian with sergeant stripes does the driving. They take turns laying down the scare tactics.
“I don’t give a fuck about a bullshit beef between brothers. This is about money.” According to Angel, Fool can either work for them or pack his shit and move to another town.
“We ain’t askin, we’s tellin.” The Weasel ugly-mugs the twin through the rear-view mirror.
Fool isn’t impressed. He’s shaking off the threats like water rolling off a ducks back and, at the same time, keeps his poker face in place. The object of the game is to keep his cool and not let them see him sweat. The first sign of a crack in his armor and they’ll be at him like pit bulls on a puppy.
“Deal sounds sweet, but I’m trying to watch my figure? Besides, Imma solo act, so you can keep the deals for suckas and the threats for chumps.”
Fool wonders if Run has a part in this stunt, or is his team ready to retire his number and they’re out shopping for new talent. Either way, Fool writes himself a mental note to make sure his own squad learns from this experience. For now on police get counted coming in and going out of the building, with full sweeps of the vacant apartments before shop reopens.
Angel lets his anger show, blood pounding at his temples and boiling behind the whites of his eyes. Truth is the act is just a façade, and the twin’s speculation is only half-right. Angel wants him on the team, but McMassey wants him dead. The cop has more than one trick up his sleeve to get Fool to accept his offer, but the easy way is always the best way, so he turns up the heat a couple notches.
“Aight, you smart little mother fucker,” The big dick spits the words out of his mouth like a rabid dog. “You think we ran off your customers today, wait until we put a real sweat suit on your building, 24/7. You’ll be lucky to make ten dollars a day.” He pours it on thick.
“Yeah. Ten dollars a’day.” The scrawny sergeant yes-mans his partner as the Explorer pulls up to a red light. Angel turns around in his seat so Fool can get a good look at his intimidation face.
